NANA'S MAGIC SWING NOW AVAILABLE!
If we are lucky, the first time we are called upon to speak with children about death will be when the goldfish dies.  Even that amount of luck cannot fully prepare us for the day a special person dies.  Talking with children about death and grieving is just plain difficult.

My name is Janet Shindle and I am the author of Nana’s Magic Swing.  My reasons for writing this story can be found in my blog, but I want to share two particularly important reasons right here on my Home Page.

Losing a special person in our lives is inevitable.  It is one of the few things in life we know with absolute confidence we and the children in our lives will face.  Chances are, when it happens, we will be equally as devastated as the children we are responsible for.  In the midst of that grief, we might not anticipate what a child is feeling or thinking.  Or we might be surprised if they voice it, like I was when our son asked how Nana was going to breathe in that box.  Nana’s Magic Swing was written to anticipate as many of the questions and feelings a child might have as possible, and to give answers to those questions and legitimacy to those feelings.

Nana’s Magic Swing was also written with the strong belief that a child’s most significant caregivers, usually parents, are in the best position to support their child during times of grief, even as they might be falling apart themselves.  The voices of Graham’s parents are heard throughout the story, offering comfort and answers with compassion and understanding.  It is my sincere hope that Nana’s Magic Swing can help to prepare your child for the loss of a special person, and comfort them in their time of grief.
